Here is the gingerbread house from 1993, which was the first one delivered to MD Anderson. In the picture with me is Heritage Club Sous Chef Leulsegeud Marcos. During a holiday party, the Executive Chef told me that the host of the MD Anderson party wanted to meet me.
Once we were introduced, she asked if she could purchase the house for the hospital. I told her it was a gift if she would arrange for delivery, and I volunteered to go along and set it up. What she did not know is that my mother-in-law was in treatment at the hospital at the time. I did not tell her either. Even though we lost mom a couple of months later, it was the young patients that watched me set up the display that day that showed me what really matters in life. I kept building gingerbread houses almost every holiday season because of them, but not until 2004 was I able to return to MD Anderson.
